NASA. Observation of a dwarf galaxy by the HUBBLE space tele - Lot 319
NASA. Observation of a dwarf galaxy by the HUBBLE space telescope. It lies some 44 million light-years from Earth, placing it in the cosmic neighborhood of the Milky Way. This galaxy is a perfect target for astronomers wishing to study dwarf galaxies. With a mass of around one hundredth that of the Milky Way, it is a relatively large example of a dwarf galaxy. Its classification as a dwarf galaxy is due to the relatively small number of stars it contains, but the galaxy's loose spiral arms also place it in the category of barred spirals. This structure is barely visible in this image, which shows the galaxy as a bright but ill-defined pinwheel. Despite its small proportions, the proximity of this galaxy means that its light can be picked up by fairly small telescopes, which facilitated its discovery by astronomer William Herschel in 1801. 2018. Vintage chromogenic print. Legend on label on back. 20.4 x 25.4 cm with margins.
