NASA. This superb photograph shows the planet JUPITER, the l - Lot 327
NASA. This superb photograph shows the planet JUPITER, the largest planet in the solar system, with its satellite EUROPA visible in the foreground. It was taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope when the planet was 406 million kilometers from Earth. Hubble's precise view provides researchers with an up-to-date weather report on the monster planet's turbulent atmosphere, including a remarkable new storm brewing, and a cousin of the famous Great Red Spot region preparing to change color - yet again. A unique and exciting detail of Hubble's snapshot appears in the northern mid-latitudes in the form of a bright white, stretched storm moving around the planet at a speed of 560 kilometers per hour. This single plume erupted on August 18, 2020, and ground-based observers discovered two more that appeared later at the same latitude. While it's common for storms to appear in this region every six years or so, often with several storms at once, the timing of Hubble's observations is perfect to show the structure in the disturbance's wake, during the early stages of its evolution. Behind the plume are small, rounded features with complex "red, white and blue" colors in Hubble's ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared images. Such discrete features usually dissipate on Jupiter, leaving behind only changes in cloud color and wind speed, whereas a similar storm on Saturn gave rise to a long-lasting vortex. The differences in the aftermath of storms on Jupiter and Saturn may be linked to the contrasting abundances of water in their atmospheres, since water vapor can govern cloud mass and wind speed. Period chromogenic print. Legend on back on label. 25.4 x 20.4CM with margins.
