NASA. DEEP SPACE. LARGE FORMAT. Lost in Deep Space, a dwarf galaxy appears amid countless white stars, interspersed with yellow and orange galaxies of various shapes, dotting the black background. A prominent galaxy is a pale yellow spiral in the upper left-hand corner of the image. Another feature is a large white star with long diffraction spikes, seen just to the right of the upper center. All this is outside the Milky Way, and just 3 million light-years from Earth, in our galactic neighbourhood. Although close, it is much more isolated than other nearby galaxies that interact with our own Milky Way. Our dwarf galaxy also has a chemical composition similar to that of galaxies in the early universe, meaning it is low in elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. Vintage chromogenic print.
