Martiros SARIAN (1880-1972) Ardanouch, 1912. Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard. Signed, titled and dated in Russian on the back. Dedicated in Russian to Artashès Karinyan, 1924 on the back. 31 x 23 cm. Ardanouch (Ardanuç) is a village in the province of Artvin in the Black Sea region, today in Turkey but in the Russian Empire at the time of the painter's visit. The young Martiros Sarian painted several small pictures of this isolated place where Christians and Muslims lived peacefully together.
