LETTER FROM STEFANO DOMENICO SCERIMAN, BISHOP OF CHIOGGIA - Lot 86
LETTER FROM STEFANO DOMENICO SCERIMAN, BISHOP OF CHIOGGIA Handsome handwritten document in Italian, dated Chioggia, September 1, 1797, from Bishop Sceriman announcing that, contrary to rumors, he did not intend to leave the diocese after the arrival of Gen. Bonaparte's troops. Autograph signature and drystamp with the family coat of arms. 42 x 29 cm. Stefano Domenico Seriman (1729- 1806), of the Order of Friars Preachers or Dominicans, bishop of Chioggia in Veneto Veneto (episcopus clodiensis), belonged to the wealthy Armenian Catholic family Seriman, Sceriman, Scerimani or Schahrimani family, descended from Khodja Sarrat son of Schahriman of New Djulfa. Four of Sarrat's sons emigrated to Venice at the end of the 17th century and were ennobled by Austrian Emperor Leopold I. The printed letterhead bears the family's ecclesiastical coat of arms. The double-headed eagle is a reminder that this was a family of imperial nobility, and the four stars are a reminder that four brothers were ennobled. Framed under glass.
