PORTRAIT OF ÉMILIE CARLIER Photograph (carte de visite format) framed in a very fine mosaic of cardboard openwork in the style of oriental embroidery, with the initials E. C. (or T. C. for Thévenin-Carlier?) in calligraphy. 23 x 17 cm. Armenian work from Sivas, circa 1900. Émilie Thévenin (1871-1959) was the wife of Maurice Carlier, French vice-consul in Sivas (Sebaste) from 1894 to 1899. She witnessed the Hamidian massacres, about which she informed the French public in her best-selling account published in 1903: Au milieu des massacres : journal de la femme d'un Consul de France en Arménie. Framed under glass, period frame.
