Frédéric SORRIEU (1807-1887) - Lot 109
Frédéric SORRIEU (1807-1887) Armenia on its ruins, 1861. Extremely rare black-and-white lithograph, titled in Armenian Հայաստան (Hayasdan) and subtitled in French L'Arménie sur ses ruines. A mention in Armenian Փարիզ. նկար. Սօրիյհօյ:- Սեպ. Ճանիկայ Արամեան: indicates that the work was made in Paris, that the painter is Sorrieu and the publisher Djanik Aramian. Printed in Paris by Lemercier. 50 x 57 cm. Framed under glass This patriotic image, created by the Frenchman Sorrieu at the request of Djanik Aramian, publisher of Armenian books in Paris, was to enjoy considerable success throughout the Armenian world for decades. It was copied over and over again, so much so that its original creator was forgotten... until its recent rediscovery by Guillaume Aral. No other copy is known to exist.
