Cabochon-encrusted gray jade on gold-flecked enamel.
Indian work for an Armenian bishop.
India, 18th century.
Length: 11.5 cm.
The tips of Armenian bishops' pastoral staffs featured facing snake heads, while those of vartabeds featured leaning snakes (not facing each other).
The presence of a large Armenian community in India dates back mainly to the 17th century, and continued until the 19th century.
