Cultures of Mexico - REMOJADAS Richly adorned standing female figure. Orange-brown terracotta, brown paint and traces of bitumen. Height: 50.5 cm Remojadas culture, ca. 300 B.C.-800 A.D. State of Veracruz, Mexico. Broken glue and visible restorations. Provenance Galerie de Sfinx, Amsterdam Private collection, Geneva (acquired from Galerie de Sfinx in 1978, with invoice in archives) Private collection, Vaduz (acquired 2006) This large female figure is probably a priestess standing in a hieratic pose. Arms at her sides, palms open in a prayerful attitude, mouth open. Traces of bitumen around the eyes and large, hollow earrings. She wears a loincloth decorated with two parallel horizontal black stripes. It is fastened with an elaborate knot. A necklace made of braided plant material ends in a rather large element. The headdress is a bonnet topped by several elements, each made up of tightly-packed bands. Thermoluminescence test of 07/22/2024 by the Re.S.Artes laboratory (Bordeaux) indicates a dating between 170 BC and 190 AD. As this lot is a temporary import (from outside the EU), import VAT of 5.5% must be added to the hammer price before it is released for consumption in France.
