SALONIQUE. 2 Letters from the Comptoir de SALONIQUE au LEVAN - Lot 278
SALONIQUE. 2 Letters from the Comptoir de SALONIQUE au LEVANT (Thessalonica, Greece), from 1791 and 1792, signed MEUSNIER, addressed to Mr BOUSQUET Négociant in Agde (Hérault). The letters have been purified: "Salonique le 27 Octobre 1791 ... Nous ne tarderons à savoir ici les nouveaux embarras dans lesquels le Départ inopiné du Roy (Louis XVI) avait jeté la France.... We have heard that the Constitution to be presented to the King has been finalized; we have yet to learn what the outcome will be... My son is leaving for Marseille. I have decided to send him there, to occupy him in some counters. I thought I should take him away from the idleness in which he was living here... I am providing him with the means to train and acquire a few notions of commerce, so that he can return to the Levant and work on his fortune... A ship arriving from France just now tells us that the Constitution has been sanctioned by the King (Louis XVI). This news has had the most agreeable effect on our French people; it is expected to lead to the tranquility of the Kingdom, Amen."
