The expressions of esteem he received in my presence from Generals La Barollière, Dalesme and Prefect Dugua, increase if possible the good opinion I have of him. You know the severity of my principles, I would not recommend him to you, if he were not capable of honoring the position he has applied for. ... Please send me a word of reply to the above address and believe in my complete friendly devotion."
