(WAR OF 1870/71) Émile OLLIVIER (1825-1913) Deputy for the Seine, Minister of Justice, Head of Government in 1869. He announces the War with Prussia. Académie Française - Autograph letter signed Émile OLLIVIER, November 25, 1870 (He was in exile in Italy until 1873). 2 pages in-8°: "My dear friend. At last I see your name in the middle of a list of prisoners, and I assure you, it gives me great joy, at least the bullets have spared you, God be blessed. I'm in MONCALIERI, near TURIN. The south is uninhabitable: my father had to flee with my son, whom the Democrats, unable to lay hands on me, intended to assassinate. I'm in a small country house where we live like paupers, suffering and working. Not even knowing if this letter will reach you, I will say nothing of the present, and will only give you one piece of advice for the future, the one I give myself Sursum corda: don't be discouraged. Let us be firm, calm, and take advantage of these days of hardship, to better prepare ourselves for the struggles to which our homeland will be condemned for a long time to come, both externally and internally...". His wife is well, and has shown herself to be courageous through all these trials.
