ROUEN, Seine-Maritime. Trial of 1752, concerning an AFFAIRE - Lot 145
ROUEN, Seine-Maritime. Le BOULLENGER Imprimeur du Roi, 1752 - Pour Extrait: "....The Curé de Saint Godard has at last achieved the goal he set himself: he needed victims to repair the scandals of which he alone is the author...The sacrifice of two women, as unfortunate as they are innocent, is further proof of the purity of his morals...My Father's continual illness put the Curé de Saint Godard within reach of seeing me often...The harsh manner in which I received the proposals of this holy man did not fail to embitter him against me. He added to the hatred he felt for me, the intention of defaming me and making me look like a prostitute, so as to have nothing to fear from the speeches I might have made...My supporting facts were dismissed as inconclusive and destructive; that is to say, they judged that even if it were true that the Curé de Saint Godard was guilty, I should still be punished as a slanderer... But how far from the truth those who would draw such conjectures would be! Two years in chains have taught me to value life only for what it is worth...It is not to prolong that I ask that my judgment not be hastened; but it is because I know that sooner or later innocence & truth pierce the clouds with which they are covered..."
