Placarded in BAYONNE (Handwritten subscription signed CRUAX) "the Establishment of the Republic on the debris of an old Monarchy, the Salvation of the People in the midst of numerous enemies, the preservation of France through treason, perfidy & civil wars, commanded the Government to take extraordinary and violent measures... It is time for individual passions to give way to the general interest and public instruction. The French will not lose in vain quarrels the advantage of five years of thrift, patience and courage: they are cultivating the tree of liberty without yet calculating what its fruit will cost. But may aristocracy & malevolence be firmly called to order; may the people no longer tire of their unjust complaints, & may the revolution, which was but a stormy sea, soon bring us to the port of equality & the reign of laws."
