Cultures of Mexico - COLIMA - Lot 6
Cultures of Mexico - COLIMA Fish-man headrest Polished terracotta Height 20 cm Colima culture, ca. 200 BC 500 A.D. Mexico. Minor restoration to feet and a few chips, otherwise well preserved. Provenance Private collection, Geneva (acquired late 70s/early 80s) Private collection, Vaduz (acquired 2006) This headrest, also known as a Reclinatorio, features a smooth, sloping face supported by both human legs and a fish-like tail: fins are on the sides. Above is a spout. This type of work, characteristic of Colima culture, by mixing human and animal parts, is as surreal as it is enigmatic. This is a temporary import lot (from outside the EU), for which import VAT of 5.5% must be added to the hammer price for sale in France.
