Jacob de WITT (Amsterdam 1695 - 1754) The Martyrdom of Saint Lucy after Rubens Black stone, red chalk and estompe Oval shape 17.5 x 24 cm Slightly oiled, small stains Copy after one of the compartments in the decor of the Jesuit church in Antwerp, painted by Rubens around 1620. A similar series was presented by Bob Haboldt in 2001/2002 (see catalog "Northern european old master drawings and oil sketches, n°62, reproduced). Jacob de Witt drew copies of the 36 compartments of this set in 1711/12. The decor was destroyed by fire in the 18th century.
