ANCÔNE - CARNIVAL "Bando per le Maschere". Extremely rare street poster printed in Italian to inform the population of Ancona of the rules laid down by the city's governor for the 1668 Carnival period concerning the wearing of masks, the carrying of weapons and balls. Period handwritten inscription in lower margin. Bears the ecclesiastical coat of arms of Governor Marcello Durazzo (1634-1710), Genoese nobleman, protonotary apostolic, governor of Ancona. Dimensions framed under glass : 71 x 52 cm Born into a prominent Genoese family, Marcello Durazzo (Duras) was elevated to the title of Archbishop of Genoa and later created Cardinal. The Ancona Carnival (Carnevale di Ancona) is one of the oldest in Italy. The wearing of masks was regulated, not least because some people took advantage of the occasion to hurl public insults or to rob participants incognito.
