Original edition of Prosper Marchand's review. The "Cymbalum mundi" was hated from its first publication in 1537, which appeared under the pseudonym of Thomas du Clevier. It was so carefully condemned that copies are rare. His publisher, Jean Morin, was himself arrested and interrogated. As for Des Periers, he went into hiding and, miserable, committed suicide, says Henri Estienne. Better written than most books of his time, the authority saw in Des Periers' allegories, irony and duplicity of language, condemnable heresies and impieties. A very fine copy.
