BOUCHES-DU-RHÔNE. 1799. Proclamation by General SAINT-HILAIRE, Commander of the 8th Military Division. At Headquarters in MARSEILLE (13), 29 Brumaire An 8 (Nov. 20, 1799) - "The French People, victorious in the struggle of Liberty against despotism, wanted to secure their independence and all the rights it assured them, by reaching the end and goal of all revolution... Each reaction has had its crimes and its victims: no more are needed... It is time for the French People to rest on the marble of the Laws... Let the agitators tremble!... Called to command the 8th division, you will know me to be severe, but just; a friend of the fatherland, of the Republicans, and their zealous defender..."
