MAINE-ET-LOIRE. News by hand, from PARIS March 17, 1755. Autograph letter signed l'Abbé TOUPELIN DE MONTALET (Prieur de Châteauneuf (Châteauneuf-sur-Loire), Chanoine), addressed to Mr BARET Greffier de la Sénéchaussée et Présidial d'ANGERS, in Angers (Maine et Loire). 2 pages in-4°: "... I have received the 180 Livres you sent me by messenger... You no doubt know that the Archbishop of Paris is back in Conflans. On Sunday, he consecrated the Bishop of Cap. I counted 12 bishops at the ceremony... as many lay lords... Mr. Premier Président went to Versailles yesterday for an answer... King Stanislas has taken under his protection the two clergymen from St Étienne du Mont who took refuge in Lorraine on the Queen's recommendation... The parish priest went to Avignon in disguise with Sr Ansel, Vicar of St Étienne du Mont. The inhabitants of Sainte Marguerite threw mud on the Parliament ruling and overturned the post to which it had been attached by the executioner accompanied by 250 archers... We are assured that the King has made the Dutch declare that if the English fire a single shot at any of the ships he has sent and will send to his islands, he will send a thousand men to them..."
