Mr de CHOUPPES received me as an Officer a few days ago. If you believe, my dear Maman, that it is possible for me to find fifteen thousand livres to borrow from the Constitut. I'm sure I'll have a Company by buying a Sous Lieutenance from the Mestre de Camp, and you'll be a Captain in one or at most two years. And if you believe, my dear Maman, that I can find the money, I would beg you to write to Mr Marquis d'HARCOURT and ask him for the Sous-Lieutenance... letting him know that you have the money ready to send him... Today we are passing the review of the Commissaire des Guerres at two o'clock in the afternoon. We have a lot of rouzeolles (measles) in this cy country, and most of the ladies in society have had it... You must have had news of Mr De GUICHEN'S LAST FIGHT (La Bataille de la Martinique, April 17, 1780). Please let me know the outcome of this affair if you know it, as we have no positive news of this battle...".
