VIENNA. 1791. REVOLUTION. COUHÉ SOCIETY OF FRIENDS OF THE CO - Lot 232
VIENNA. 1791. REVOLUTION. COUHÉ SOCIETY OF FRIENDS OF THE CONSTITUTION. Couhé (86) August 19, 1791. Letter signed by three members of the Society, including the President. 2 pages in-4°: "Frères et Amis. In accordance with your order to visit castles, towers, bastions and other fortified places. We have expressed our wish to the National Assembly on this subject; it will be able to weigh in its wisdom the legitimacy of our request. Our Society, like you, is motivated by everything that tends to the happiness of the true Friends of the Constitution and makes it impossible for their enemies to harm them, and we believe that as a result of our request to the National Assembly, we could also ask it to take care of the cannons, couleuvrines etc. that most of the former Lords still possess in their castles and other fortified places. Why shouldn't the National Assembly forbid any individual from having any of these weapons in his home, an instrument of Despotism which, by insulting our past slavery, would still seem to threaten us with the same fate, and by departing from the respect which all citizens owe to the sacred rights of property, this same Assembly could not issue a Decree by which all possessors of cannon, couleuvrines etc. would be enjoined to deposit them at the local Common House."
