ILLE-ET-VILAINE. 1797. Deputy COSTARD (Alexis-Joseph) born i - Lot 338
ILLE-ET-VILAINE. 1797. Deputy COSTARD (Alexis-Joseph) born in Saint-Méen (Ille et Vilaine) 1753 - Vice-President of the Court of Appeal, Deputy of Ille-et-Vilaine in 1810 - RENNES (35) 19 Fructidor An 5 (5 Sept 1797) - Autograph letter signed COSTARD, to his former Colleague and Friend AUBRÉE Député au Conseil des Anciens. TB political text: "COUASNIER, your successor in BAINS, has sent me 150 Livres for your salary for the month of Germinal as Director of the Jury of this Arrondissement.... We can no longer touch our Salary, however modest it may be, if we compare it to that received by professors at the Collège de RENNES ... Tranquillity has not been disturbed here for some time, although the Paris thermometer is either rising or falling. The wise and peaceful conceive alarms, dissensions which rise and seem to increase between the first powers of the Republic; One fears a rupture, a shock which replongent France in the horrors of an intestine war; One fears to see renewing the Bastilles, the Echafauds, the Torches and the Daggers. May God turn such scourges away from our heads; and give us the good Spirit to heal the wounds that still bleed. Peace on the outside, calm on the inside are the only things that can repair our losses, and they depend on the union of powers. We feel it here, we say it and we hope that the Council of Elders, in its wisdom, will be able to maintain it...". - 3pp in-4°.
