INDIA. Charles-Alexandre de LINOIS (Brest 1761 - 1848) Admir - Lot 369
INDIA. Charles-Alexandre de LINOIS (Brest 1761 - 1848) Admiral, victorious against the British at the Battle of Algeciras in 1801. 2 pieces signed September 1804, on the victorious battle of VIZAGAPATAM, India, in the Bay of Bengal. 6 pages and a half in-folio. (Nice lithographed portrait attached). Copies of two reports by Captain VRIGNAUD, Commander of the Sémillante, and Commander Léonard MOTARD, of the Vaisseau le Marengo, to General LIMOIS, on the naval combat that pitted them against English ships and fire from forts in the roadstead of Visigapatnam (or VIZAGAPATAM, in India) on Complementary Year XII (September 18, 1804). Description of the various maneuvers and phases of the battle before the French gained the open sea. The Commander of the Frigate LA Sémillante concludes his report with the ever-pleasant thought of having been under your command with very inferior forces (I'm speaking generally), scouring the enemy's coasts, his roadsteads, forcing him to take desperate measures in one of his main establishments, and kidnapping and causing the loss of trading vessels...".
