General FRIRION (François Nicolas) Vandières/ Meurthe-et-Mos - Lot 446
General FRIRION (François Nicolas) Vandières/ Meurthe-et-Moselle 1766 - Paris 1840. General in 1800 and Baron of the Empire - Autograph letter signed Paris June 23, 1824. 3 pages in-4°. Long private letter to General François Xavier DONZELOT, Governor of MARTINIQUE (not mentioned): "My Dear General, I have just learned from young Adolphe de VAUCLIN (Martinique) that you have granted him a position as draughtsman in the Military Engineers... this young man is grateful, as are his family... if my worthy Uncle were still alive, he would express to you all my gratitude. I consider myself the organ of his last wishes and I beg you to receive my thanks. You know how tenderly he loved you, you were one of our former members of the Army of the Rhine to whom he was most intimately attached... Recently we had an opportunity to talk about Martinique when we dined at the Maréchal MOLITOR's, Admirals TRUGUET and VERHUEL were present and you can imagine that we could not talk about this island without mentioning its Governor. Mr le Maréchal, the Admirals and General CAFFARELLI all agreed that they felt sorry for the man who will be called upon to replace you when, by chance, you plan to return to France; I won't tell you all the good things they said about you, so as not to offend your modesty... There is a family here who takes a great interest in a young man named Mr REYNOIR, who lives on your island to be a notary... I still invoke your protection for this young man... My Dear Governor, Take care of your health, and save yourself for your old friends, among whom I like to think you will always count me..."
