Paris, Imprimerie de Clousier, 1780-86. 3 volumes in-folio full contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt, gilt lace framing the boards, dent. Int. gilt edges on marbling (qq slight defects on headpieces and corners, slight foxing). 430 copper engravings numbered from 1 to 278. With the very beautiful allegorical frontispiece after Moreau le Jeune + an engraved title, 2 engraved headpieces with 2 x 2 portraits of Zurlauben and Laborde + 241 copper engravings plates out of the text (111 with 2 pictures, mainly picturesque views, 11 plates with 71 portraits, 5 plates of seals and medals and 7 maps including the one of Switzerland). A complete copy, but with the small engraving 429 on plate 278 not printed. First edition of the best description of the Swiss cantons of the time. A famous work on Switzerland, superbly illustrated by the best draftsmen of the late 18th century. The last two volumes contain the plates, i.e. an engraved title and dedication and 249 plates, here in first printing, captioned in pen at the time, finely engraved in intaglio by Née and Masquelier after Pérignon, Le Barbier, etc., each showing one or more views of towns and landscapes, portraits, local costumes, numismatic subjects, including six double-page maps and two folded mountain panoramas. A fine, fresh copy.
