Monsignor AFFRE (Denys Auguste), Archbishop of PARIS (Saint- - Lot 361
Monsignor AFFRE (Denys Auguste), Archbishop of PARIS (Saint-Rome-du-Tarn/ Aveyron 1793 - Killed in Paris on June 27, 1848.). Letter A.S. "AFFRE, Bishop, coadjutor of Strasbourg", on the letterhead of the Archbishopric of PARIS. Paris February 15, 1840. Beautiful letter A.S. addressed to Monseigneur l'Évêque d'AUTUN. 1p ½ in-8° : " Monseigneur. The Affair of the Ladies of the Sacred Heart of AUTUN has only passed to the secretariat and the prefecture of the Seine. It is now at the Ministry. The Minister having asked only for the assets and liabilities of the Mother House. That is to say, the novitiate, I think that nothing more will be required. Our recommendation will probably be postponed until the end of March. I have, I assure you, no time to think if I am appointed bishop. I have, besides the business that is not lacking, a letter to compose. Since I do not want to make any compliments to the Parisians, nor fail to be prudent, nor take any commonplace, but speak frankly about the viles of the times, this is not a small concern for me. Pray to the good God that he enlightens me and directs my pen. We have no Archbishop and they won't give us one for another month and a half. At least that is what they say. The reason is that they are happy with our administration, but I cannot say that I myself am very happy with what I am. I can't wait for someone else to take over. When we meet again, I hope that God will spare us this pleasure when I will have been able to sort out a little of the business that awaits me in Strasbourg... "
