MARCH OF LOUIS XIII ON LA ROCHELLE, FOR THE SIEGE OF THE CITY 1628. - VILLEBERNIER (Maine-et-Loire) October 17, 1627. Receipt from Pierre BAUSELIN, farmer, of 60 livres tournois "for having the roads repaired and several small culverts made, from the ford to the town of Villebernier, for the passage of the King (LOUIS XIII) and his retinue to SAULMUR (Saumur) and to make a barrier around the passage of the fields and the exit of the ford, so that no one passes through except his Majesty and those of his retinue." - Vellum (11 x 30cm) oblong. a little yellowed. (On August 10, 1627 an army led by the King himself, accompanied by the cardinal minister Richelieu, the duke of Angouleme and the marshal of Bassompierre, invested La Rochelle, the most important of the cities given over to the reforms, the boulevard of Protestantism, as it was called then. On October 28, 1628, a convention was signed that took away all of La Rochelle's privileges; and the next day a deputation came to present the inhabitants' submissions to Louis XIII.
