MOUCHERON, Claude Athanase - [ FORTIS de PILES - de SAINT-CH - Lot 181
MOUCHERON, Claude Athanase - [ FORTIS de PILES - de SAINT-CHARLES, Guy - GRIMOD de LA REYNIERE, Alexandre Balthasar Laurent ] : Omniana, or extract from the archives of the universal society of Gobe-Mouches, dedicated to S. S. the President, Founder and Chief General. Paris, chez Maradan - Petit - Delajonchere, 1808, ORIGINAL EDITION on vat paper, large in-12, br. in a "waiting" cover in period paper, the book is in a modern slipcase-case in light grey paper with gilt author and title on pink title-piece on spine, XVI - 424 pp, ill. of an intaglio engraving in frontispiece representing the assembly of the Gobes-Mouches Staff, Publisher's Warning, Errata, Publisher's Dedication Epistle, Statutes of the Gobes-Mouches Society. A typical work of the "French Spirit" of the late 18th century. Curious work written in a "burlesque" way about the "Société des Gobes Mouches", only composed of gourmets. Moucheron being a pseudonym hiding Alphonse - Toussaint - Joseph - André - Marie - Marseille, count Fortia de Piles (1758 - 1826). Grimod de La Reynière is mentioned in the statutes as the secretary of this society, of which Louis-Sébastien Mercier was the Garde des Sceaux. The author is the only eyewitness to give an authentic description of the famous "semi-nutritious" meals organized by Grimod de La Reynière. Very important book for the knowledge of the "gastronomy" of the beginning of the XIXth century in France. Well completed with the engraved frontispiece by Mariage, which is often missing. This engraving represents a meal where eight gourmets are seated. One of the guests is none other than Grimod de La Reynière, who can be recognized by the "ancien régime" wig he wore even after the Revolution! Very RARE. This copy is in its "juice" of the time. Untrimmed with soiled edges but fortunately with large margins. Paper in good condition with some traces of old dampstaining; frontispiece in very good condition, complete with the publisher's handwritten signature.
