CHEMISTRY. 1782. PHOSPHORESCENT CANDLE. "Ordonnance de Polic - Lot 192
CHEMISTRY. 1782. PHOSPHORESCENT CANDLE. "Ordonnance de Police qui défend la fabrication et la vente des Bougies Phosphoriques", December 24, 1782. Following several accidents already caused by the use of phosphoric candles. "We have commissioned Sieur BRUN and MACHY, provosts of the College of Pharmacy, to analyze and decompose them; their report shows that these candles, enclosed in glass tubes that are highly susceptible to breakage, are flammable on contact with air alone due to phosphorus, whose highly concentrated acid can only be stopped in its effect by means that are not within everyone's reach, and are therefore subject to many dangers... Let us forbid all Physicists, Chymists, Masters in Pharmacy, Barometer Makers and Merchants and others, to manufacture Phosphoric Candles in any way or manner whatsoever, as well as to sell, distribute or peddle them...". Printed by Ph-D. Pierre, Imprimeur ordinaire du Roi, de la Police et c. rue St Jacques, 1783; 3 pages in-4°.
