Christophe MATHIEU DE DOMBASLE (Nancy/ Meurthe-et-Moselle 17 - Lot 505
Christophe MATHIEU DE DOMBASLE (Nancy/ Meurthe-et-Moselle 1777 - 1843) Agronomist, precursor of French agricultural education. He built a sugar beet factory under Napoleon 1st. Created an "Exemplary Farm" at ROVILLE-DEVANT-BAYON (Meurthe-et-Moselle). He perfected agricultural implements (the Plough). He has his own statue in Nancy and Dombasle-sur-Meurthe - Autograph letter signed Mathieu de Dombasle Director of Établissement Agricole De ROVILLE (54). Roville August 19, 1839, addressed to Mr. SIEGLIER Director of the Alsatian Refinery in WACKEN near Strasbourg. He sends him samples of raw sugar. "... based on current Paris prices, I think I can set the price of the 1st stream at 122 Francs per 100 Kilos and those of the second stream at 118 ... the means of packaging will present difficulties for me, especially to do it economically, because we are not used to building in our country the casks that would be suitable. I can find good molasses barrels in Nancy with a capacity of 300 to 400 liters, at a price of around 4 francs each. What value would you put on them for the use you could make of them? I was very pleased to learn, Sir, that the Refinery Company is determined to continue its operations. Indigenous sugar is perhaps destined to endure a few more years of persecution; but it will undoubtedly triumph, and the reaction will be proportionate to the oppression that will have been willed upon it..." 1 page in-4° -
