Cultures of Colombia - TAMALAMEQUE Funerary urn with anthropomorphic lid Ceramic Height man: 44.5 cm Height base: 35 cm Total height: 77 cm Tamalameque culture, ca. 400-1500 A.D. Colombia. Significant surface wear. Provenance Galerie de Sfinx, Amsterdam Private collection, Geneva (acquired from Galerie de Sfinx in 1981, with invoice in archive). Private collection, Vaduz (acquired 2006) Cylindrical urn with lid depicting a dignitary seated on a bench. The man is seated with both hands on his knees. The undecorated lower part is adorned on the sides with aviform figures in relief, forming four handles. This is thought to be the personification of the deceased, probably a cacique. Thermoluminescence test carried out on 26/07/2024 by the Re.S.Artes laboratory (Bordeaux) indicates a dating between 1060 and 1400 AD. This lot is a temporary import (from a non-EU country), and import VAT of 5.5% will be added to the hammer price for release for consumption in France.
