[FLAUBERT] - Georges CAIN (1853-1919, painter and illustrato - Lot 29
[FLAUBERT] - Georges CAIN (1853-1919, painter and illustrator, pupil of Edouard Cabanel) / "Docteur Franklin-Grout", original drawing in violet pen, ink wash and pencil (21.5 x 32 cm, author's ink stain), signed lower right with an autograph dedication to Madame Franklin-Grout - This is Caroline née Hamard (1846-1931), Gustave Flaubert's niece, whom he had raised, and who was his heiress and executrix (she married Dr. Franklin-Grout in 1900) - Caroline had a relationship with Georges Cain in 1902 (probably the time of this drawing), at a time when she had decided to bequeath some of Flaubert's manuscripts to the Musée Carnavallet, of which Cain was the curator (this did not happen, as the City of Paris refused to give Caroline assurances that it would not divulge unpublished passages at the risk of uncontrolled editions)
